Poem Summer Days© By Connie Hughes
Summer Days©
That led out just beyond the gate
We chased fire flies for their radiant
light
Laid in the tall grass and counted the
stars at night
We waded through the stream once the
waters rose
Waited for the sun to come and warm our
toes
Skipped rocks along the water’s edge
Raised one hand and swore a pledge
That these days would always last
We didn’t know then that time moved so
fast
One summer we sailed ships by day
Keeping Bly and the rest of his pirates
at bay
With golden wings we soared through
clouds
Looked down upon the waving crowd
At times we laughed so hard at silly
rhymes
Our hearts were young with no concept of
time
Once marooned on an island in the south
sea
In the jungles of Africa we climbed
the tallest of trees
We were cowboys and Indians fighting in
the Rio Grande
We were like Geronimo at Custer’s last
stand
We stood beside Washington in seventeen and eighty one
The day the battle of Yorktown was won
But now I’ve grown tired and I’m quite sad today
When I heard the news that my dear sweet friend has passed away
Memories flood my heart but I don’t mind.
They take me back to when my heart was young and I had no concept of time.
