What Could I Be Poem© by Connie Hughes

 What Could I Be©
Mother what can I be?
What is it that you see?
Could I fly to the stars?
Or maybe even walk on mars
Could I dance for kings?
Maybe even learn to sing
Could I sail a ship across the world
Even if I am just a girl
Could I write stories and fairy tales?
Catch a train and ride the rails
Could I fly a plane up through the clouds?
Would that make you proud?
Could I be a soldier brave and strong?
You see I’m not quite sure where I belong
Could I swim the channel and win the gold
What did you think mother, when you were told
That I was sure to come
Maybe a girl or maybe a son
Why did you cry so hard and think I would ruin your life
Didn’t you love me or even like
Why didn’t you want to hold me, as much as I wanted to be held by you?
Why did you cut me down before I grew?
We could’ve had a lifetime together
Battle the storms through any weather
But that was something you just couldn’t see
One day we’ll meet and what a day that will be
Mother, I pray in heaven every day that God will show you the way.
