Poem The Sonnet© By Connie Hughes

The Sonnet©
Do you hear the sonnet?

Like music it plays inside my head

The beauty of the words linger on the lips even after said

Merely words but fill the heart with such passion

The books in which it lives will never be out of fashion

The pages will turn and yellow with time

But the beautiful sonnet will never lose its rhyme

Born of only paper and pen

Written on the wings of time, to live again and again

Inspired by undying love or broken dreams

never quite what they seem

Its beauty like Mata Hari slowly unveils

Revealing a haunting and bewitching tale

A weeping heart exposed on the page

Centuries may pass but the sonnet never seems to age

Snow-capped Mountains all the way to heaven, they almost reach

A salty sea captain to afraid to speak

Ships that set sail that never make port

The lonely spinster that nobody courts

Yes the sonnet is part beauty and lore

It lives in the depths of one’s soul forever more.
